 Hereke Villa

When Hereke carpets became popular, entartaining guests in the huts wasn't suitable. They decided to build a villa. Before the visit of Wilhelm II the German Emperor in 1898, the villa was built in Abdülhamit's palace in three weeks in 1894. It was transported in seperate pieces by sea and constructed in a night.

Sultan Abdülhamid's guests like, Kaiser Wilhelm II, Kaiserin Augusta Victoria, Bulgarian Prince, German Ambassador Baron Marshal, English Ambassador Ibn Resit, visited Hereke for its fame. They were entartained in the villa. Hereke's hand made gifts like silk prayer rugs, carpets, cloths, scarfs, shawls and handkerchiefs were presented the visitors. Kaiser Wilhelm II gave a unique insect collection.

It's thought that the architecht of villa was Sarkis Balyan. It was built without using any metal nail. The villa is completely wooden and it has different doors that open sea direction and land direction.

Outside, there is a lightly inclined roof and two domes, they make it symmetrical. Inside, there are three parts, an entrance, a hall and a room. Interval passings can be made double leafed doors. Hereke carpets, silk curtains and silk cloths were used for furnishing. The furnitures were brought from the palaces. There are bergere styled armchairs in the hall probably made in early 20th. century.
